Interpersonal and shared memories, commemorations, theater and drama, and secret and oppositional histories are the venues within which alternative remembrances, unauthorized and unapproved memories of the past, can be located and analyzed. Transactive memory systems are strongly supported by Web 2.0 technologies through their directory and link capabilities and the fact that a wide range of information is being digitised and made searchable. Following this, historians of religion in France began to attach less importance to major events, personalities, and institutions, and focus on ‘structural-historical’ and, in particular, ‘anthropological’ lines of questioning. TMS describes social cognition which is driven by information about the characteristics of group knowledge and the associated processes of maintaining and using that metadata to retrieve and store knowledge. M.R. Constructionism, on the other hand, is the view that the space in which a particular intermesh between human work and material recalcitrance is forged holds the key to understanding knowledge. While memory may be a moving reservoir of history, furnishing the ‘raw material’ for representing the past, it is not the same as history. But in the colonizing imagination of Western anthropologists, the work of memory was consigned to the uneventful register of structural, mythical, and sacred time: an order of signs without historicity. The information-based TMS approach goes some way to explaining the coordination and consistency in group function while remaining solidly materialist. While originating in research into studies of dyads and small groups, the concept of Transactive Memory Systems (TMS) has been extended to describe knowledge storage and retrieval in organisations. First, as already implied, constructionist metaphors take on a much stronger flavor when they are applied to natural reality, to knowledge and science. Historical consciousness shaped by states, elites, political rivalry, scientific ideology, and global capitalism plays a significant role in the formation of national and social identities. In the USA, historians of religion since the 1980s have been strongly influenced by the ‘interpretative’ ethnology (stressing the concept of ‘understanding’ rather than that of ‘explanation’) and cultural anthropology of C. Geertz. It describes how a group exchanges information about the specific expertise of each member, thereby facilitating access to expertise when it is needed. Here their investigations have been concerned with historically varying attitudes to birth and childhood, mortality and death, corporeality and sexuality, nature and the environment, God and the Church, heaven and hell (cf. Sapir's views on the history of language were linked to his view of the abstraction of patterns, and were equally controversial or misunderstood. Through intensive research and groundbreaking experimentation, we explore the interconnection between personal, inner spaces and the “outer space” of our shared reality. To the extent that the mass media have contributed to the construction of national cultures, they have also necessarily played a role in the creation of national identities, which are still the most important forms of modern cultural identity in the new millennium.
