The small settlement of Southend is the entry point for your stay on the southern end of this scenic island. Getting there involves a vehicle ferry from Gladstone to Facing Island and than ferry to Southend on Curtis Island. SITE ACCESS Location: follow the unsealed roads north from Southend, continue north from Turtle Street to find Joey Lees. They need your help to stay this way. Curtis Island is accessible by private boat or by a regular ferry service; although once on the island and camping you will need a Four Wheel Drive to get around. Rugged and isolated, Curtis Island’s windswept coastline, long beaches and sweeping sand dunes provide solitude for the adventurous camper. It even has its own airstrip. Obtain your permit before leaving the mainland. However, some parts aren’t well-cleared and the low-hanging branches will let you know your rooftop tent is still attached – the added bush pinstripes will be free of charge, too. The national park encompasses the Cape Capricorn headland. Many showgrounds offer affordable and convenient locations to camp, especially for larger RV’s.
