Valentine Holmes has been named to make his return to rugby league in North Queensland's NRL trial on Saturday. Holmes was selected in the QAS Emerging Maroons squad, but on 31 January, while in the Emerging Maroons camp, he broke curfew and was fined for public nuisance and obstructing Queensland Police. Overall Holmes has scored 66 tries in 105 NRL games since his 2014 NRL debut with Cronulla. In Round 19 against the Canberra Raiders, he repeated his efforts, kicking another field goal in extra-time to win the match 21-20. The Cowboys had set aside a large chunk of salary cap space for the best part of 12 months in the hope Holmes would return to the game, having already been in negotiations to lure him north in late-2018. He was waived by the Jets during final roster cuts, but was added to the Jets' practice squad on 1 September 2019, as an exempt international player. In Round 21, Holmes made his NRL debut for the Sharks against the Parramatta Eels on the wing in the 32–12 loss at Remondis Stadium filling in for Sosaia Feki who succumbed to an injury before the match. Holmes is expected to claim the No.1 jersey after starring at the back in his final year with Cronulla, claiming player of the year honours before leaving the club. In the fourth game against the Philadelphia Eagles he made 5 receptions for 55 yards. “His form in 2018 was as good as any player in the NRL, particularly in the second half of that season. After being named in Australia's 2017 Rugby League World Cup squad, Holmes set a Test and World Cup record by scoring five tries in the quarter-final against Samoa in Darwin. The former Australia and Queensland fullback has been named to play in the No.1 jersey against Brisbane at Barlow Park in Cairns. Earlier this week, Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall was caught up in a bio security breach. As well as offering a considerable boost to the Cowboys, Holmes is also expected to challenge once more for higher representative honours having been an Australian and Queensland regular before his NFL sojourn. State of Origin icons Wally Lewis and Phil Gould have clashed over the series opener, including a supposed injury for Queensland centre Brenko Lee. Holmes has a stunning try scoring record on the wing for the Maroons but may yet threaten incumbent Queensland No 1 Kalyn Ponga for the fullback role in 2020. Former Cronulla hooker Jayden Brailey has been named to play his first game in a Newcastle jersey on Saturday when they face St George Illawarra in their trial. He played his junior rugby league in Townsville for the Western Lions, before being signed by National Rugby League club, the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, in 2012 at the age of 17. Jordan McLean, Coen Hess and Shane Wright will round out a strong forward pack. At this stage it remains unclear on whether or not either party will require a COVID-19 test. The QRL announced he would be excluded from its representative programs for the next 12 months. A fullback or winger, he is an Australian international and Queensland State of Origin representative.
